Asleep at the wheel, Wolfsburg was victimized three minutes in as a long ball found Claudio Pizzaro who then provided Diego the ball, with the Brazilian finishing. Pizza was provider again only three minutes later, this time with Mesut Özil finishing. However with defending thrown aside for the night, Wolfsburg cut the margin in two at the tenth minute when Marcel Schäfer's cross was turned in by Edin Džeko. Werder was the aggressor for the next half-hour but with three minutes later Peter Pekarík sent a long cross to the Bosnian goalscorer, Džeko, to net the second of the net.

The match wasn't even long as Werder restored its lead ten minutes in as Diego converted from the spot after being brought down by Wolfsburg 'keeper Diego Benaglio. Sealing off the match Werder restored its two goal advantage with nineteen minutes remaining when Diego's free-kick was nodded on by Hugo Almeida to Claudio Pizzaro, who finished with perfection. Pizza sent another painful reminder to the home fans as he scored with a minute left from Almeida's provision.
