In an interview with the BBC, Shay Given now of Manchester City, expressed his displeasure with Newcastle:
“There are a couple of things they could have done to keep me, but I think in the end they just wanted to take the money.
“I just felt that after the service I gave the club, then the regime at Newcastle could have handled the whole thing a bit better.”
“They made me do things I didn’t want to do and this was an opportunity to further my career and pick up more silverware.
“In the last six months it has been fizzling out. It has not been enjoyable going into training.
“Maybe it’s myself just being selfish, but I think I deserved a little bit better than that.”
“The Liverpool match was a low point in my career.
“It was one of those points where if I had left the pitch and never seen a football again I would have been happy, I was that low.
“I didn’t know if I was going to leave but a lot of people said I was happy and settled, which I was in a way, but I wasn’t comfortable.
“I wasn’t comfortable with the way the club was going. I wanted to be challenging for honours.
“By coming here (Man City) I thought I could be at a club that is challenging for honours. I didn’t want to finish my career regretting not taking up this offer.”
I’m not sure how to take this and question what benefit Mr. Given thinks his comments will provide. Quite obviously the events surrounding Newcastle is extremely problematic and likely a number of other clubs in the Premier League, not only are they threatened with relegation but are dealing with financial turmoil. There is not a soul around St James’ that would have wanted the Republic of Ireland ‘keeper leave if the club wasn’t pressed into a move to help finance acquisitions and his commentaries reflect a myopic vision of the situation. Unfortunately, he chose to air is displeasure publicly as opposed to simply acknowledging his long service to the club and moving forward.

Shay Given deal officially announced
The much rumoured deal to bring Shay Given to Manchester City from Newcastle is official with the thirty-two year-old Republic of Ireland 'keeper joining the Citizens. Upon signing a contract that will see him through the 2013 season Mark Hughes said:
"I have said for a long time that we need the experience of a keeper like Shay. I am delighted that we have been able to acquire such an accomplished keeper, and one is so highly regarded by everyone in the Premier League.
"We are getting a very good keeper, and the experience he has will help the two outstanding young keepers that we have here in Joe and Kasper. I am looking for them all to grow as a group, and it's important that we have that influence of a senior keeper.
"I have had a good talk with him about where we expect to be in the future. From a football point of view, and a club point of view, it's an easy thing to sell because we know we are going in the right direction. Players want to be part of that."
The new 'keeper noted his excitement in joining the Citizens:
“It's exciting times at Manchester City with the new owners and this manager. There are big plans for the Club. I am very excited to be joining and delighted that Manchester City wanted my services, I'm happy that the two clubs could come to an agreement.
“I have two young kids, I had just moved house in Newcastle and there were a few things that could have made me stay there. I have a lot of friends there, and the supporters there are fantastic. They have been great to me for so many years, and I thank them for that. But I just felt that this was an opportunity for me to come to a club that in my opinion are really going to be going places.
“I am even really excited to be going training on Monday, it's a new chapter in my life and one I am looking forward to.
“The profile of the Club has changed dramatically, and there are already some fantastic players here. It looks like some good players will come here in the future as well, and I am sure the fans must be on the edge of their seats to see who comes here. There is already the nucleus of a very good team here, and I hope I can add to that. I am just delighted that they have chosen me to strengthen their goalkeeping department as well.”

the departure of Shay Given
After twelve years of service, Shay Given has left Newcastle for Manchester City. Terms of the agreement are private and although speculation has ranged from £5-10m, it matters little as the long time protector of Newcastle's is now officially part of the Man City movement.
In a very short statement, Joe Kinnear stated:
"I'm really sorry to see Shay go.
"He's been a fantastic professional and a great lad to work with.
"We bent over backwards to try and keep him at Newcastle United and offered him a longer contract to stay at the club
"He's been with Newcastle United for a long time and has been a great servant but he felt the time was right to move on and so realistically we had no choice but to reluctantly agree to allow him to make this move.
"I wish him and his family all the very best for the future."
While their is no need for ceremony in situations such as these, it does needs to be said that he has been an cornerstone of the club and dare I mention takes us all back during much brighter times.

“We are not interested in selling”
Although Shay Given noted his displeasure with recent play, Joe Kinnear insisted the club is not interested in selling him:
“Shay is contracted here until 2011. He’s our player and he is going to stay our player.
“We are not interested in selling him and he’s an integral part of the team.
“He trained very well today and will start at Hull.
“I’m going to keep the players who will keep us in the Premier League.
“I had a long chat with Shay and he wants to do the best he possibly can for the club.”
Both Arsenal and Manchester City are rumoured to test Newcastle’s resolve with a offer in the £10m+ range for the Republic of Ireland international.

Shay Given “despondent”
The Independent’s Michael Walker is reporting that Shay Given has grown dispondent with the club and considering recent interest in him by Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham.
Speaking to his representative Michael Kennedy, the Republic of Ireland international is said to feel the 5-1 lambasting by Newcastle as a “low point of his career” and “feels compelled to consider his position.”
He went on to add:
“Shay is very despondent following the very poor performance of the team against Liverpool last weekend. Having served the club loyally for over 11 years, Shay feels compelled to consider his position in the light of the interest being expressed in him by Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham.”
Manchester City is said to be preparing a £10m offer to see if Newcastle will waiver on their position of keeping the ‘keeper.

“He won’t be leaving”
While Magpie supporters nerves might be rattled with the thought of Shay Given moving on to another club, Joe Kinnear attempted to shut the down on this type of clatter. Speaking to The Journal, the Newcastle boss said:
“He won’t be leaving - he has no interest in that whatsoever. He loves the football club. He’s part of the city and that suits us because he’s a world-class goalkeeper. He’s very happy here, he’s very comfortable at Newcastle United.”
The Republic of Ireland ‘keeper has proven out to be the clubs most valuable player in the first half of the campaign and through the darkest moments provided a foundation to build up. Put succintly, Joe Kinnear said of him
“He’s the best goalkeeper in the Premier League by a mile.”
Now the key is retaining the “best ‘keeper” and with £8m being bantered around and the club in need of funds, at what price do they consider a deal reasonable? While Shay’s level of expertise is irrefutable with Steve Harper and Tim Krul waiting in the wings is the insistance that he is not moving part of a “bargaining chip” to raise the ante?

oh they really didn't say that
Quite honestly it was a headline that few copy-writers could resist and I honestly have to hand it to him for holding out. However per the Newcastle web-site it was pronounced that "It's a Given, Shay's Best in the League says Joe." How often a title is bigger than an article but for a Monday evening post it certainly is worthwhile. Yet the crux of the article is true because the Republic of Ireland 'keeper has saved the day for the Magpies on many occasions.
Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear gushed:
"He's the best goalkeeper in the league, no doubt. When you need great goalkeepers you need them to react to the unexpected and that first save from Frank Lampard was excellent. He's made another couple of good saves after that and if you're going to get a point at places like Stamford Bridge you need goalkeepers like Shay Given. But we defended fantastically well as a team and I couldn't fault anyone, I'm very proud."
Likewise as proud and yes it's a given.
