Werder holds FC Köln off to win 3-1

After scoring only one goal in the previous four matches the Green Whites responded with a convincing 3-1 victory over Christoph Daum's FC Köln. The match was evenly played and Werder was fortunate early when a penalty was awarded on Pierre Wome bringing Frank Baumann in the area. Diego went to the spot and calmly converted giving Werder the 1-0 lead fifteen minutes into the match. Both clubs had considerable opportunities to add to the score but wasn't till near the break when Torsten Frings corner was flicked into the goal by Naldo that Werder doubled their lead. However three minutes after the restart Milivoje Novakovič brought FC Köln to within one as he accepted a perfect pass from Nemanja Vučićević and sent it past Tim Wiese. However only seven minutes later Hugo Almeida returned the two goal lead as he took advantage of a defensive error and exploded into the ball from twenty meters.FC Köln proved they are ready to be a upper table squad as they continued to pressure throughout the match but couldn't break through again and Werder had the much-needed 3-1 victory.
