En Avant Guingamp to the Coupe de France finals

The Cinderella story of En Avant Guingamp continued as they defeated Toulouse 2-1 in the Coupe de France semi-finals.

Despite being in the lower part of the Ligue 2 table Victor Zvunka's side attacked the high-flying Toulouse. Guingamp took the lead at the half hour mark as Felipe Saad's incoming throw-in was headed-on by Wilson Oruma to Eduardo, who nodded the ball into the back of the net. The Breton side were forced to play a man down six minutes into the half when Richard Soumah received his second yellow of the night. With seventeen minutes a long ball to André-Pierre Gignac clear down the right and with a perfect right-footed half volley into the net the match was level. However Victor Zvunka was able to get a taste of revenge in defeating the club he coached over fifteen years ago as with a minute on the clock Wilson Oruma cross into the box took careened off a group of players and into the far left corner with Badara Sène credited with the historic goal.

The Guingampais side will now face Stade Rennais on 9 May at the Stade de France in a all Breton Coupe de France final.

Newcastle make offers on Stéphane Mbia and Albin Ebondo

Newcastle have confirmed they have made offers on two players in the amount of £4m each. While they have been reluctant to provide confirmation of the actual players, based upon description it would appear that the Magpies are targeting Ligue 1’s Stéphane Mbia of Stade Rennais and Albin Ebondo of Toulouse.

For followers of Newcastle, the offer on Stéphane Mbia should come to no surprise as they have went down this round before. The twenty-two year old Cameroonian international is a very talented young player but it is debated whether Rennes would allow him to go for £4m.

Joe Kinnear said of the offers:

“We’ve made two serious offers for decent money. When I say decent money, two £4m offers for two players. They’re considering them now. We made the bids today (Wednesday).

“We’ll probably end up spending, at the moment, about £10m but the two players I’ve offered for are £4m each.”

“The players that go out would be extra. That would be extra on top of what I’ve got.”

“I identified the two players that we wanted, told them the price of the two players and (Mike Ashley) agreed to get them providing they accept the offers and whatever is on the outgoing players would add to that as well.

“So with the outgoing players I would hope to be nearer £10m than £8m. We’ll find out tomorrow on the two players coming in.

“I’m very optimistic about it. One of them is very crucial for us at the moment. He plays for Cameroon. He’s a decent player. He’s 6ft 2ins, he’s pacy, he’s powerful and I just thought he would add something else to us.

“I explained who it was to him (Ashley) and we got on the case and we’ve spoken to the club that he plays for. So we’re just keeping our fingers crossed that they accept it.”

a key match against Lille

Under the leadership of Rudi Garcia, Lille have enjoyed a superb start to the Ligue 1 campaign and proving that they are very capable of a run at the European spot. They have shown to be have an efficient attacking force while able to limit scoring opportunities. However on the road, they have had problems garnering a victory although their consistent play has them unbeaten in nine matches. As they travel to Parc des Princes they will be looking to prey upon PSG's inconsistent play. While Lille has not been able to win at Parc des Princes in over ten matches, that will provide little solace to PSG. dropped successive 1 - nil matches to Nice and Toulouse after their triumphant victory over Olympique Marseille. The only absentee for the match is Tulio De Melo of Lille and they will likely employ Nicolas Fauvergue as a lone striker in a 4-5-1. PSG has given little indication of their attacking force however based upon last weeks match a combination of Mateja Kežman, Ludovic Giuly and Guillaume Hoarau up-front is most likely.

I will report on the match as it concludes.

PSG loses to Toulouse in dreary affair

Following the great victory over l'OM this weekend, PSG lost 1-0 to Toulouse at Parc de Princes in front of 42,000+. Alain Casanova’s le Téfécé played a flawless match and nullified the striking trident of Pegguy Luyindula,Guillaume Hoarau and Fabrice Pancrate / Ludovic Giuly. The few attempts towards Toulouse 'keeper Cédric Carrasso were all long range attempts with low probabilities. The lone goal of the match was unfortunate lone-goal by Zoumana Camara with twenty-five minutes remaining and following it, PSG was unable to generate a serious attempt to level the match.

Beyond the loss PSG loss Fabrice Pancrate fifteen minutes in. Once the club reveals the extent of the injury I will post.

PSG travels to the Côte d'Azur to face Nice this Saturday.

Toulouse visits Parc des Princes

Following this Sunday's tremendous victory over l'OM, PSG has been working hard to stay grounded and immediately turn its direction towards Toulouse's visit to Parc des Princes. Alain Casanova's le Téfécé are a very high quality club that have made massive strides from last campaign where they perilously came close to relegation to Ligue 2. They play a very tight defensive style and are unlikely to provide unforced errors. Since settling-in to play after a poor start against Olympique Lyonnais they have continued to frustrate all attacks and will be patient looking for the counter. The are most likely to stack the midfield in a 4-5-1 and rely upon Jérémy Mathieu, André-Pierre Gignac and long-time Stade Rennais man, Étienne Didot in the attack. They will be without Mathieu Berson, who is suspended and Norwegian international Daniel Braaten and Paulo César are doubtful.

Paul Le Guen has a fully fit squad and has given no indication of lineup changes.

I will report on the match as it concludes.
