The Green Whites took another step towards the DFB Pokal as they defeated Nord derby rivals Hamburg 4-2 on penalties. With the victory Werder advances to the DFB Pokal final at the Olmypiastadion on 30 May.
Thomas Schaaf's side took the lead eleven minutes in as Diego's free-kick from the edge of the left side of the box was pushed back at the last gasp by HSV 'keeper Frank Rost but the rebound was pounded in by German international Per Mertesacker from close range. HSV brought the match level seven minutes past the hour when on a fast counter Ivica Olić's effort was saved by Tim Wiese but the rebound came out left to Guy Demel. His quick shot was re-directed by Olić in to square the match up.
Without further scoring the match headed to extra-time and still thirty additional minutes the match headed to penalties. Although Joris Mathijsen converted for HSV, one after another Tim Wiese denied Jérôme Boateng, Ivica Olić and Marcell Jansen while Claudio Pizarro, Mesut Özil and Torsten Frings converted. Werder now has the chance to win the DFB Pokal for the first time since their victory over Alemannia Aachen in 2004.

Werkself heads to DFB Pokal final
With the only route to the Europa League through a victory in the DFB Pokal, Werkself overcame the never-say-die Bundesliga 2 side Mainz 4-2 in extra-time. The victory now books a date at the Olmypiastadion in the capital on 30 May against the winner of Wednesday's clash between Bremen and HSV.
After a tightly played match Greek international Angelos Charisteas broke the deadlock with eight minutes remaining as he pounced on a rebound and sent it in from a few metres out. With Werkself supporters anxious for Berlin, the celebration was delayed as two minutes before the whistle Montenegro international Milorad Peković's cross was headed-in by Aristide Bancé. Mainz was tiring quickly and only two minutes into extra-time Arturo Vidal gave Bayer 04 the goal they needed as he sent in a rebound from close range. Werkself added to the lead as Simon Rolfes headed-in Angelos Charisteas' corner to back of the net thirteen minutes into extra-time.
Michal Kadlec made it 4-1 as he completely split the opposition defenders, rounded the 'keeper to the right before scoring as supporters sung out "Berlin, Berlin, wir fahren nach Berlin!"

die Königsblauen DFB-Pokal preview
Following the sturdy 2-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt die Königsblauen travel south-west to face FSV Mainz in the DFB-Pokal.
Mainz are presently second in the Bundesliga 2 table and coach Jørn Andersen has them confident of making their way back to the top division. Yet to lose in the Rückrunde, today's match is the scalp crown a very workman like season so far.
Fred Rutten is aware of the oppositions strength stating:
"I've watched Mainz twice and they are no pushovers. The back four are excellent, the midfield is well organised and the strikers Bancé and Baljak are in good shape physically."
Expecting the Pokal to bring out their best he added:
"These results tell you how good they are. And they'll be desperate to progress another round in front of their own fans."
The Königsblauen are without Benedikt Höwedes and Christian Pander with Jefferson Farfán questionable.
