Disappointing draw to Arminia Bielefeld

Arminia Bielefeld got precisely what they wanted as they held Vfb to a scoredraw. The draw leaves die Roten in tenth place with eighteen points, a full ten-points behind Bayer Leverkusen and extends the winless streak to four matches.

The match had few, if any notable chances and was an unabashed disappointment for Armin Veh. After the match he commented:

"I was particularly disappointed about our unwillingness to work in the first half. We weren't aggressive enough and we were not able to create any real chances on goal. After the break it was better, we were more aggressive but we never really maintained our direction. We are just seemingly incapable of controlling our opponents at the moment and we will have to see to it that that improves in the coming games."

Vfb's opportunities to score with moderate at best and although they controlled ball possession they lacked the resolve to finish and truthfully barely threatened Bielefeld goalkeeper Dennis Eilhoff. Bielefeld packed their midfield and deserves credit for eliminating any efforts going forward.

The most worrisome moment for Vfb was a peculiar error by Jens Lehmann at the fifty minute mark when he cleared the ball straight to Bielefeld' Christopher Katongo via a throw but luckily he wasn't able to launch to go-ahead goal.

After the match Jens noted:

"We've played a lot better than we did today. It's difficult to say exactly what the problem was. We need to be patient now and hope that things begin to improve. In the situation shortly after the break I wanted to launch the ball forward just over the opponents head but I miscalculated my own position. I was standing deeper than I though and threw directly to the player. Luckily I was able to make the save in the end."

Vfb will have to do a lot better next Saturday as they face Wolfsburg at Volkswagen Arena.
