VfB Stuttgart gets a tough away point

Mario Gómez came to the rescue scoring with two minutes remaining in the match to give die Roten an important 2-2 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt. With the "away" post Stuttgart is eleventh in the table after twelve matches but only four points out of fifth-place Hertha BSC.

After the match VfB coach Armin Veh said:

"We played and combined very well in the first half but were unable to convert our superiority into goals. The game was very scattered after the break. Before Frankfurt's second goal there was a clear foul on Elson and Mario's goal to make it 2-2 was a perfectly regular goal. You could see that we were in a position to raise our game even having gone 2-0 behind. The point was deserved but I am still frustrated about the fact that we invested so much in the game but couldn't win it."

Frankfurt opened the scoring eighteen minutes after the start as Nikos Liberopoulos drove in a rebound off Jens Lehmann of Martin Fenin's effort. Vfb had a number of chances to draw the match even, most notably Élson at the twenty-second minute but they couldn't get past 'keeper Oka Nikolov. Nikos Liberopoulos doubled the lead with twenty-six minutes remaining with a beautiful set-up from Martin Fenin. With the match looking bleak for Vfb, their comeback started with Élson's in-close cross being headed-in by Martin Lanig. With a sense of urgency in play, Mario Gómez scored with two minutes remaining.
