Much of the years hardships were forgotten by Feyenoord today as they defeated PSV 1-0 at De Kuip. The victory keeps alive de Rotterdammers hopes for Europa League spot while sinking the defending champions efforts. PSV entered the match knowing that a win was absolute necessary in their own European hopes but it was Feyenoord who played with the intensity of a champion as they controlled the Eindhoven sides attack.
The match started in a careful manner with both sides either unwilling to go forward or showing the creativity to break through. Only the most modest of chances were taken before the break and the match went to half without a score. At the restart, caution was still the rule of the day and general movement was a long way from intense. Unfortunately before the hour Henk Timmer, Kevin Hofland and Jon Dahl Tomasson were all knocked out of the match with injuries and Leon Vlemmings tactical play was obviously very limited. By the hour mark the defending champions started to apply a great deal of pressure on Rob van Dijk, who had come in for Timmer but he was up to every challenge as well as being just plain lucky with some of PSV's miesses. However the day took a different turn with just over eighteen minutes remaining as Andwélé Slory won a corner. As Diego Biseswar swung the ball in, Leroy Fer shook of his mark and charged into the box to head the ball in. De Kuip erupted with the one goal margin and for the remainder of the match Feyenoord easily kept PSV's attack under wraps.
