late goal by Schalke defeats Eintracht

The cruel side of Football showed as a packed Waldstadion witnessed a late goal by Schalke spoil Eintracht's comeback in route to a 2-1 defeat.

Looking for the right attacking mix, Friedhelm Funkel brought Caio and Alexander Meier in for Mehdi Mahdavikia and Nikola Petković. The lineup worked early as intended as the majority of attacking efforts came for Eintract. That aside Schalke took the lead in a quick counter when Jefferson Farfán's long pass to Rafinha was driven into the net just past Markus Pröll. Unable to break through Fred Rutten's tough defensive tactics Ümit Korkmaz and Markus Steinhöfer entered the match for Leonard Kweuke and Caio past the hour. The Austrian Korkmaz flourished in the attack and with nine nine minutes remaining Michael Fink headed Steinhöfer's well placed cross in from close range. Looking like the draw had been salvaged Eintracht supporters were shocked when Schalke marched quickly down the pitch and Heiko Westermann scored the winner two minutes later. Eintracht poured forward in added time with Chris' effort close but it didn't come the match ended in a 2-1 defeat.
