Wolfsburg out of DFB-Pokal

Wolfsburg was unceremoniously dumped from the DFB-Pokal losing 5-2 to Werder Bremen at the Volkswagen Area. In a highly disappointing performance, over-committing to the attack, poor mental and physical preparation as well as classic defending flaws lead to die Wölfe giving up goals to Diego and Mesut Özil in the first seven minutes. Handicapped two goals down, Bosnian international Edin Džeko sent in Marcel Schäfer’s cross three minutes later to cut the margin in half. While both sides were limited going forward for much of the half, Wolfsburg sent to the break even as Peter Pekarík, ex of MŠK Žilina, sent a long ball to Edin Džeko, which he subsequently headed-in.

While bolstered with the leveling goal it was the visitors who returned from the break with resolve as five minutes before the hour ‘keeper Diego Benaglio brought Diego down and the spot pointed to. The Brazilian play-maker made no mistake and sixteen minutes later another defending blunder lead to Bremen's fourth goal as a set-piece from Diego's free-kick resulted in Claudio Pizzaro sending the ball in. With a minute remaining Hugo Almeida provided the Peruvian, Claudio Pizzaro for the second of the night bringing the match to a painful 5-2 conclusion.
