The horrible start of the Rückrunde deepened today as the Green Whites lost 2-1 to Energie Cottbus. The win pushes die Lausitzer out of the relegation zone as they have now picked-up seven points since the restart using a tough defending plan by coach Bojan Prašnikar, combined with players who play with a fire to succeed.
Alternatively the loss maintains the sad run by Werder and now with a single point in four matches they have fallen to eleventh in the table as Köln jumps above them. How long before the denial of crisis is anyone's guess but with the result the chance of making it to European competition seem very low.
Without Claudio Pizzarro in the lineup, out of the match because he missed practice, Werder continued to attack with endless waves but as a hallmark of this year, they couldn't finish. After a scoreless first half, Werder finally got on the mark when Clemens Fritz was headed-in by Hugo Almeida from close range. However that was the end of the scoring for Werder as the host side fought back with two unanswered goals. Five minutes after the opening strike Ivica Iliev brought the match even when drove the ball to the inside corner from the left side of the box. Looking for the victory Sebastian Boenisch and Hugo Almeida came close for Werder with just over ten minutes left but it was die Lausitzer who found the winner in added-time when Dimitar Rangelov was played through by Timo Rost and the Bulgarian international pounded the ball into the net to give Energie Cottbus the 2-1 victory.
