With the injury to 'keeper Joe Hart, Mark Hughes requested and received permission from the Premier League to bring-in a temporary replacement. In speaking of the injury, the manager said:
“It’s likely to be a couple of weeks. It may improve and this type of injury can sometimes improve markedly quite quickly. It was a little bit delicate initially because there’s a fear that there might have been ligament damage. I don’t think that’s the case, it’s a bad strain but he’ll be back sooner than we thought – that’s the thinking at the moment – but we’ll need to wait and see.”
Of Kasper Schmeichel he added:
“It’s unfortunate but over the course of the season you will get injuries,” he continued. “I thought Kasper came in and did really well. He showed a lot of confidence and settled everybody down after conceding a goal and Joe having to go off. He looked very assured and I have no qualms about putting Kasper into the side, he’s done it before, and he’ll be fine. He’s a very confident young man and he probably feels a little bit aggrieved that he’s not playing anyway because that’s the confidence he has in his own ability. It won’t faze him and his self confidence is one of his strengths, so to reiterate, I won’t have any problem playing Kasper.”
Actually Kasper a "bit" aggravated is a understatement as he feels he was completely led astray when he extended his contract and will look to leave when the opportunity presents itself. He had only signed his contract and the urging of then manager Sven-Göran Eriksson, with the promise of more time and once signed he was on the bench.
Returning to the backup 'keeper situation, third-man Richard Martin is presently injured and based upon Mark Hughes commentary they prefer not to show a vote of confidence towards eighteen year-old reserve 'keeper Tobias Johansen and are searching for a short-term solution.
Thirty-five year-old Swedish capped 'keeper Magnus Hedman cites being approached but turned City down stating:
"They want me to sit on the bench for this weekend's game (against Arsenal), but I need at least two weeks' training. But my answer of no is not definitive. I need to think about it further."
