VfB overcomes Gladbach

After being thoroughly trounced by Bayern München in the Pokal on Wednesday, VfB rebounded with a 2-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach. Gladbach, with a firm eye towards avoiding relegation showed a very controlling discipline style that had been missing in the first half of the year and shut down Schwaben attacking forces. However VfB came close to getting on score sheet five minutes before the break but Mario Gómez' effort was cleared off the line by Steve Gohouri. Gladbach, who had come close earlier missed a another when Canadian international Rob Friend's header from the six yard box went astray. However the match was to decided on the poor own goal with twenty-three minutes remaining when 'Gladbach defender Roel Brouwers snatched a loss from the jaws of a draw and he deflected what should have been a easy clearance. Following the goal Gladbach manager Hans Meyer plan was thrown away as they now had to throw forward and were wide open on the counter. Unable to find the needed goal VfB added its second with four minutes left as Mario Gómez sent in a rebound from Logan Bailly's save of Sami Khedira electrifying scissors kick.

Following the match Markus Babbel expressed the difficulty of the match:

"It wasn't easy for us today because the team was a little insecure following the defeat by Bayern München. We were very disciplined and never stopped believing in ourselves. I'm quite satisfied that we were able to make use of one of our chances to take the lead. After that we had more room to play in because Gladbach had to open things up. In the end we deserved the win."

The major point of this performance is that this was tactically a match you wouldn't want to have missed and you can throw the first half of the year out when it comes to Gladbach. Hans Meyer has made the necessary changes to his lineup and they are ready for a fight.
