Arminia Bielefeld stuns Schalke
As stated in the match preview Arminia Bielefeld would be a problem and considerably more difficult than PSG in the Thursday's UEFA Cup match. That wasn't an exaggeration as Arminia Bielefeld withstood all of Schalke's pressure and were able to earn a 0-0 draw. To add insult to the decision Arminen played a man-down as Jonas Kamper was sent packing with his second yellow on the hour.
As the match started, a scoreless draw seemed improbable as Schalke looked to get on the scoreboard early with Jermaine Jones and Ivan Rakitić nearly scoring in the first five minutes. However this was a message of things to come in the match as the final touch was consistently off. Ten minutes before the half Kevin Kurányi header, as luck would have it, pounded off the post. As the match went on, die Königsblauen owned possession of the ball but couldn't find a way through the defense. With four minutes remaining in the match Jefferson Farfán had a perfect chance from inside the penalty area to give Schalke the victory but Arminen goalkeeper Dennis Eilhoff denied him.
After the match Fred Rutten, when discussing Eilhoff noted that he "made the play of his life."
However his other comments weren't so pleasant as he knows his club gave up valuable points in the table and ones that had counted on. Not mixing words he stated that is "very unhappy with the result" and "to win we have to score goals."
Goal scoring chance return this Tuesday against Karlsruhe.
