In front of their cheering fans, Kazan strode confidently towards the title with an emphatic victory. Serhiy Rebrov, Gökdeniz Karadeniz and captain Sergei Semak led the forces forward but it was ex-Newell's Old Boys Cristian Ansaldi who opened the scoring eleven minutes before the break. Twenty-three year-old Aleksandr Bukharov continued to make his statement towards a international cap as he doubled the score two minutes after the break. With twenty four minutes remaining Christian Noboa made it 3-0 and Kurban Berdyev's miraculous year is nearing clinching.

Michael Laudrup masterstroke is nearing completion as Spartak Moscow, Myaso has pushed its way into a UEFA Cup spot. Myaso completed dominated taking a 3-0 lead before a late consolation goal by Vladimir Kuzmichev with sixteen minutes left. Spartak opened the scoring Aleksandr Pavlenko converting on a penalty just before the break. The highly promising twenty-three year-old Nikita Bazhenov striker added the second goal thirteen minutes after the break before Czech international Radoslav Kováč put the match out of reach two minutes later.

In possibly the biggest upset of the weekend, Valeri Nepomniachi Tom' Tomsk controlled Zenit's powerful attack and sent the champions a deafening blow. With the chances of the Champions League bid virtually gone, Dick Advocaat must re-energize his forces to ensure they win a place. After Viktor Fayzulin opened the scoring twenty minutes after the start, it appeared Zenit was off and running but only three minutes later Macedonian international Goran Maznov brought the home fans to their feet to level the match at one where it stood.

The Citizens played the majority of the match a man down when Isaac Okoronkwo was red-carded twenty-seven minutes in the match for a professional foul in the area. On the ensuing penalty kick 'keeper Anton Amelchenko came to the rescue with a brilliant save in what was otherwise a very closely marked physical match.
