AC Omonia v Man City match preview

Following the come from behind 2-1 victory over AC Omonia, in the opening leg of the UEFA Cup, Manchester City welcomes the Cypriot club to Eastlands.

The first leg got off to a dreadful start for Mark Hughes squad as Omonia took the lead to the delight of their home supporters. City's strike-force of Elano, Jô and Robinho were largely kept under wraps under the hour mark when they began their comeback on the strength of two-goals by Jô.

Since that time Omonia has continued on their winning ways domestically, defeating both Enosis Neon Paralimni and Alki Larnaca whilst the play around Eastlands has been confusing to say the least. The mind-numbing jubilation of the 6-0 defeat of Portsmouth was dampened with the humiliation of being cast out of the Carling Cup by League One Brighton and this past weekends 2-1 loss to Wigan. While reams of excuses will be noted for both losses, each with varying worthiness, the glaring truth is that both losses showed poor discipline and fundamentals as well as a lack of passion. Mark Hughes search for consistency is ultimately his greatest test as while the media will consistently discuss new acquisition targets, he is more than aware that this group of players must begin to play as a team if they are to fill trophy cases.

On the surface or really any manner in which you review this match, the visitors are out-matched but as with the initial leg, they cannot be underestimated. For City supporters, they will be able to welcome Mr. Martin Petrov and Michael Johnson back from injury and both are expected to provide immeasurable leadership on the pitch.
